How do you fix a leaky Duct System?

To start fixing your leaky ducts, you'll need to identify the leaks.

This can be done by inspecting your ductwork for visible holes or gaps, using a smoke pencil or infrared camera to detect leaks, and most importantly completing a duct test to determine the leakage for the system size. The new Maryland Code has been adapted to the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) 2018. The code requires that the maximum allowed leakage rate for residential buildings is 4 cubic feet per minute (CFM) per 100 square feet of conditioned floor area, or 8 CFM per 100 square feet for commercial buildings. The test must be conducted at a pressure of 25 Pascals. Check out this blog which explains how a duct test is completed along with the new Maryland requirements.

Here’s a video showing how to smoked a system out, this can also be completed with a fogging system.

Once you've located the leaks, you can seal them with specialized duct mastic, foil tape, or even closed cell spray foam. This is shown in some photos below…

Insulating your ducts is also a crucial step in fixing a leaky duct system. By insulating your ducts, you can prevent energy loss, and even excess humidity with an attic system, and improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system. Plus, insulation can also help prevent condensation from forming on your ducts, which can lead to mold growth and other issues.

While fixing small leaks can be a fun and satisfying DIY project, larger or more complex leaks may require professional help. Professionals can perform a duct leakage test and provide a detailed analysis of your duct system, ensuring that all leaks are identified and properly repaired.

In the end, fixing your leaky ducts is a smart investment in the comfort, health, and cost-effectiveness of your home. With proper sealing and insulation, you can enjoy consistent temperatures throughout your home, improve indoor air quality, and save money on your energy bills.
